When you get an offer for a last minute airline flight to some exciting destination, the problem may be finding a hotel room at the last minute. There may be many of these offers made and people are quick to act on great deals. When booking travel at the last minute, hotel accommodations may not always be available, and the airline flight offered may have to be let lapse. There is also the likelihood that the hotel accommodation charge is higher than you anticipated and make the airline offer less attractive.

Negotiating Last Minute Hotel Rates

If you are traveling by car and decide to stop for the night, making your reservations in advance can give you added benefits. For example your room is ready and available and often you can ask for a discounted rate. When traveling without arranged reservations and walking into a hotel unannounced, there is a good chance the last minute hotel stay is going to cost the going rate. Depending on where and when, the rate can seem excessive, and gives you no chance to negotiate.

For example, during the winter months a last minute hotel room in a vacation destination area may cost under $50 a night. However, getting a room in the same hotel during the vacation season can easily cost three times that amount, unless there is something special going on, the price for a last minute hotel room will be even higher.

Trying To Plan Ahead For Last Minute Travel

If you are given the opportunity for a trip with little notice, you may not be able to make reservations far enough ahead to take advantage of special offers. Most hotels want at least two weeks notice for any special bargains and if planning to use travel reward points, the number of rooms set aside for the members may be limited. Making last minute hotel reservations through a membership club may offer some relief from full price, but during heavy travel seasons may not net the low price expected.

Last minute hotel deals can be found but booking too early and having the plans change may end up costing you extra. If you have changed plans and have to cancel reservations you may end up being charged a cancellation fee. Your travel time may be drawing closer every day, and making last minute hotel reservations if you are unsure of the exact date is tricky. You don’t want to miss out on a hotel room, but you don’t want cancellation charges either.
