For most people the idea of being on the phone trying to schedule a flight and a hotel room is daunting, because last minute travel plans have a reputation of being expensive. The belief is that when you want to travel at your convenience and there is no time for planning ahead, most airlines charge the normal rate.
In the past, making last minute travel plans, did not give any discounts. They generally required a minimum time between booking the flight and scheduled departure. The plan may have allowed for changes to be made prior to the flight, but most scheduled arrangements were sold on a non-refundable basis and if you needed to adjust the flight times later, there was probably going to be a charge, especially if you were trying to change the day of departure.

Prices can be trimmed from even last minute travel arrangements if you are flexible in the times of departure and return. The more structured your need to travel, the less likely it will be to trim costs from the price of a ticket. However, many companies offer significant discounts if you can fly at times when they have a lot of open seats, there is a good chance you will find great last minute travel deals.
You might go through an internet travel service that allows access to several airlines and searches for the best last minute travel based on the parameters you need. Most of these services will offer different options in relation to departure and return times and give the option of adding a motel room to the last minute travel arrangements.
Do not accept the first offer you see as final, as some of the companies will be less expensive for the price of last minute travel, although the airlines and flight numbers may be identical. Verify the restrictions on any travel plans before paying for the ticket and then choose the best price that fits your travel needs.
